Before looking at this pictures, you were asked to consider your impression of Vietnam (both the land and the people). You considered the terrain and climate of the land as well as the clothing, food, homes, etc of the people.
Please look at the pictures on the link below. After examining the pictures, please write a thoughtful comment that explains your initial impressions of the country and its people as well has how your impression has been altered.
Not to sound arrogant but, everything in the photos was what I already knew. I have a vast interes in history and culture and alreadyknow of the conditions of modern Vietnam. There are vast jungles and cave systems. Large bustling cities are scarce, but present. The people where traditional, asian stile weaved clothing. There are large market places selling many goods, both common and “exotic”. However, I learned very little that was new to me, aside from a more modern look, I have not learned much, aside form exact clothing the wear, my view was a tad out dated. Seth A. Killingbeck
My original thoughts on Vietnam were that it is a country which still requires much modernization, in both the rural areas and the main cities. My thoughts were confirmed when I saw the countless live animals, unsanitary conditions, and openness of the markets within the city of Ho Chi Minh that do not allow for an entirely safe environment for people, animals, and food alike. Also, the rural areas of Vietnam are areas with many destitute people living in places with little modern luxuries and amenities such as plumbing, comfortable clothes, footware, and insolated housing. The people of Vietnam, in both rural and populated areas, continue to live in places that are not entirely brought to the levels which is necessary to be considered a modern nation with proper sanitation, food sources, safety, and living accomodations. The terrain of Vietnam was much different than I thought it would be. I assumed it would be vast land of swamps buit there are also mountains and several different terrains. The transportation was also much different then I thought because I tyhought they did more walking. Although the people and their clothes were spot on, almost identical. Also the huts in villages were like I thought but the city was not.
When I looked at the pictures of Vietnam, I was surprised to see how wrong I was about how the Vietnamese live. The first thing I noticed was the transportation. I thought they traveled in buses like the ones in Boston. But, in Vietnam, the people traveled in a smaller looking bus and piled into it. Most people, if not riding the small bus, ride bicycles and motorcycles. There are very few cars on the road. Also their clothing was very different. Women wear very colorful dresses, even for their weddings, and the men dress more casual. Another interesting thing is how different their medicine is.
Originally, I thought the Vietnamese wore similar clothes to Americans accept their clothes were made with less quality. Now I learned how they wear hats, robes, and vests. Some have different designs on them as well. Before I knew what the land in Vietnam was like, I pictured the land as very open and lots of grasslands. I learned how there is a lot of water and trees in Vietnam. I percieved the houses in Vietnam as small, stone houses, but now I've learned how they are small huts where the Vietnamese live. My impression of Vietnam was altered.
Before looking at the pictures of Vietnam, and its people I thought that Vietnam would be better looking. I envisioned Vietnam having woods and hills, the people wearing hats and handmade clothes, and also people walking and having cars. After viewing the pictures the people of Vietnam don’t have good teeth, or good clothes also there clothes do match. I thought there would be a lot of dirt and woods but there is a lot of grass, also the houses are worn down and straw. The people are mostly poor and do not live in good conditions.
I thought the land was barren. But the land is full of jungles, open water, farms and old ruins. I think they a lot of clothes like ours. They ware mainly traditional clothes and it looks as if they make there own. The houses are small and are not made like the houses we have here. My thoughts were accurate. Transportation is limited, they walk, ride animals, bikes, boats, or fit as many people as they can in a vehicle. I think they don’t have stores like we have, some stores are the same like McDonalds and maybe Wal-Mart. My thoughts were true.
VIetnam, like anywhere in the world, has it's poor places and it's richer places. Vietnam seems to be a little poorer then others but they still have their historical places like Hanoi. There are also poorer places, such as the North which is a place were everyone seems to be doing some physical. Vietnam is just like every other place in the world.
My first impression of Vietnam was a landscape of rough terrain and surroundings. HOwever, after looking through the pictures, I noticed the artistic and wide variety of values that Vietnam really has. There are beautiful villages aside from the rough terrain. That is all
I was right with most of the things that I wrote down in class. More specificly, I was right that the vietnam is mostly jungles and that people not only live in large cities, but also in small villages. I also knew that in the large cities the people used bicycles and small motor vehicles to get around. The only thing that I was not sure about was the clothing. Cody Powers
At first I thought that Vietnam was just a place of poverty. I assumed that their modes of transportation were something along the lines of camels or llamas. In reality though they use buses with a lot of people. Also the food selection they have is beyond compare, they have so many different varities. The way people might portray the way the Vietnam is as a bad expirence but the actuality is that its a pretty nice place. It may have its fault but all in all it was something different then i truely and origanlly made it out to be.
When i first thought of Vietnam, I invisioned a desalate jungle scene with timid asian people working in fields. Some of the pictures were like that but there were so many different landscapes, and other activities people were doing. Such as the vast colorful oceans, and cool circular boats people were using to fish. Also I noticed the different forms of transportaion, which seemed to be very cramped and unpleasnt. The clothing was also very different than what i expected (exept the straw hats). Vietnam seems like a cool place to visit and has so many wonderful envoirnments.
when i first thought of vietnam i thought they lived more in jungles and the wilderness and less in cities, i learned that the people of vietnam live in very small villages. I knew how the vietnam people looked but i had no idea that they dress the way they do
When I first thought of Vietnam, I pictured dirt roads, people dressed in poor clothing, and poor run down cities and houses. After looking at the pictures I learned that there are no big cities, but small less populated villages and things of the like. Outdoor markets are common throughout the pictures and the people wear a look more modern than what I had pictured in my head.
My first impression of Vietnam was that there was extremely populated cities, unsanitary conditions and very poor living conditions in general. This was proved to be true when I looked at these photos, there were many people that looked as if they have nothing. Also in the Markets there were animals everywhere in the streets, venders crowding food in every open space they could find and narrow spaces for people to get in and out of the streets. All together it seems as if the people living in Vietnam had nothing and barely survived their day to day lives due to lack of safety.
In class, I envisioned Vietnam to be overall poor and run down and imagined the climate to be hot and dry. As shown in the pictures of Vietnam most of what I envisioned was right. The houses, some made of straw, were small and deprived just as I thought. There houses are located along water and in villages. Some villages have the houses on stilts which I did not picture. But transportation was very different from what I thought. People in Vietnam use buses for transportation which are very crowded. Also, when they buy food for their families they go to markets on the street. Most men and women weave baskets for food and other things and that is what they do. Vietnam is somewhat different from what I planned on being.
As I was from the cultural area of Asia, I basically know some of Vietnamese culture little bit more than other people in America. But yet I was not from the country Vietnam, so I didn't see or know much as Real Vietnamese. The Vietnamese cultural seems to have variable cultural influences to me. Through many structures in the pictures I could see the influence of France from the colonial era. Also the temples, Chinese letters on some structure, and the clothes of red color they where for holiday show the influence from China. To me the transportation, the economy, and the clothes they wear were interested. In the pictures of the Ho Chi Minh City, they were using more of motor cycles than cars. The transportation called “Cyclo ride” seems very interested and reminded me of the unique transportation in Philippines “Tricycle.” The bus in the picture of the county place which a lot of people were riding didn’t shock me that much, but still was a surprise. The picture of some markets in the Ho Chi Minh City was not surprising, because we have some places like those in the middle of cities which Korean calls “si-jang,”but funny to see culturally similar things in other country. Among the clothes they wore in the pictures, I liked their traditional Vietnamese clothes (which were probably influenced by China). It is called Ao Dai. I also liked the way how they dissolved the traditional cloth into the uniforms for high school girls. The gallery, I found through Ms. Mikels’ blog, briefly showed the Vietnamese culture. The Vietnam I saw through the pictures may only be a part of the actual culture which can be experienced. But the culture of Vietnam, like any other cultures, was very interested to look at by just watching only the part of the actual one.
